I want to run down to the local CD store and pick up a Mozart clarinet concerto recording. Which performances are the best to look for, who is the current favorite artist. I will probably have to order the CD and I assume I will have ten or twenty different performances to select from.

You must have a Tower Classical or Borders Classical store nearby. If so, you are very lucky. When I travel, they are the first visit on my list. They are the only ones that would that kind of volume in one work like the Mozart. A typical Borders or Barnes & Nobles will have 3or 4. MAX

No need for armor! Stolzman does a fine job on Mozart. I really prefer David Shifrin on the Basset Clarinet, though. It's interesting to hear the difference in the two artist's interpretation, particularly the Adagio and the Rondo. David Shifrin makes it sound effortless!
Terry, go with any of Mark's recommendations. You're sure to enjoy!

The best two versions i have encountered by far are the Basset Clarinet version by
Sabine Meyer, on the EMI best recordings of all time. The simpler more common version for soprano clarinet is performed by Alfred Prinz and the Vienna Phil. Conducted by Karl Bohm.Its recorded on Deutsche grammophon

If you get the Michael Collins on Basset Clarinet version (Deutsche Grammophon), you will get the Beethoven Violin Concerto played on Clarinet thrown in. Interesting!

Sorry, I don't want to be really controversial or get into an argument or anything, but what's wrong with the Emma Johnson recording? I think it's really nice, and to me it sounds at least as good if not better than a lot of other ones.But that's probably just me being naive.

I live in a small town and we don't havve a big book store. So I know I will go down and just get a list of names from which to order (the catalogues are at least on computer in these lettle outposts now!). You have given me just what I need, a way to select which names to buy.
I had heard that BG had performed and recorded this one, also had heard some disparaging remarks about his performance.
I went to the first rehersal of our orchestra last week (the "new" 1925 FB Buffet with G. Smith mouthpiece and Chaddash barrel did fine, kind of hard to get pianissimo notes started though). The new director announces we will do the Mozart this year! Then (remember he had never met any of us and did not know our abilities) says "I think I can get somone to do the clarinet part. Well I am first chair and really haven't ever done it, the second chair has performed this work years ago, and there was a new player with a nice Rossi horn I don't know and don't know if she knows this work. I was a bit put off that this guy didn't even consider that he might audition the part! Instead he hinted it's his friend or we don't do the piece! That kind of attitude doesn't bode well, and in my book is just plain rude. I had assumed that a Jr. College group was for our education and improvement. Well it used to be!
To top it all off this guy says "I always have a cookie club at rehersal break, we will rotate bringing cookies among all of you". That really went over well with all the wind players... I'm not going to blow cr_p down my horn! I guess that is what happens when you pull your directors from the string sections.
Anyway, I want to hear a good recording and maybe work it up for my own experience. It is beginning to look like I may not be staying in that orchestra.

I love cookie breads at orchy rehearsals--that is why I always keep a toothbrush and paste in my clarinet case to avoid the "blow c**p down the horn syndrom." Just a suggestion. As for Mozart, I vote for Marcellous and the Cleveland Orchestra. Good Clarineting with your performance!!!!!!

The Michael Collins performance of K.622 has received excellent reviews fom many critics, online & in print. Emma Johnson is wonderful! Marcellus' is the cheapest copy as most stores carry it in their budget classics for $5.99 (Naxos also has a very good budget version with Kalmen Berkes). mw
PS Per David Weber, there WERE reasons that BG studied, for one, with Reginald Kell. Kell's command of (certain) classical music was beyond many of his peers. Kell did work with BG on the Mozart (& I think may have been on hand, to assist, at Tanglewood --- at least, I have heard reports of that being the case) . Kell, of course, had his association with Aspen around that time, too.

Hands down i vote for Harold Wright's with the BSO, Robert Marcellus with Cleveland, and Sabine Meyer i'm not sure what orchestra she's with but she's playing on a Basset Clarinet so it's lovely!

Eric Hoeprich is a Clarinet treasure. His offerings on historic or reproduction instruments are UN-equaled. Tony Pay and others run a close second. mw

If you can get several get one clarinet version, the Marcellus is the best for the money, and one basset clarinet version (D. Shifrin or S. Meyer).
The version by H. Wright is also very nice a bit more romantic than the Marcellus.

Terry, having the honor of playing in an Orchestra which is doing the MOZART is, for many, a once in a lifetime thing --- I look at it this way --- _when_ you might get to play it again is certainly an UNKNOWN for most. A bird in the hand is worth many in the bush when it comes to the MOZART.
Of course, the MOZART shouldn't just be played, but it should be played right (within limits of course)
If after studying the music you feel capable and up to the task (or somebody else does for that matter) .... someone should share this with the new orchestra director.
WHY IS THERE AN ORCHESTRA? Is it for the everyone --- musicians, too --- or just the audience? You make some very valid points. Stick to the issues and mention what I would call the "drive" behind being a community orchestra musician.

May I recommend the gang at CDChoice, out of Philadelphia?
They were formerly known as Classical choice, and have nuttin ta do wid
the CDNow mess.
Nice people, they have new and used in the selection.
I got the Kjell Fageus version from Opus3 records out of Albany, New York which is also on the Basset clarinet.
For my money, Sabine the Dream.
Close second (tie) the excellent Sony Masterworks rerelease of Bob Marcellus
or Buddy Wright with Boston Symphony chamber players.
If you buy a Schmaltzman disc your d**k will fall off!
