There's been lots written about the preparation of reeds before playing them, but nothing (that I could find) about the best thing to do with them when you're done playing. Is it best to leave them out to dry on a flat surface, or put them right into a reed holder to dry while being held flat, or something else?

I believe a reed case with a glass plate is best. remove the reed from the horn wipe dry and place in case. Works for me.

Wendy -
Hold the reed in your left hand at the butt end, thumb on top and index finger across the bottom, with the tip facing to the right.
Pinch the bottom and the bark lightly between your right thumb and Index finger, thumb on top, and slide the "pinch" toward and beyond the tip. Repeat until the reed feels dry -- maybe 10-15 strokes.
This lets you put away the reed mostly dry and prevents mildew.
Best regards.
