A couple of weeks ago I ordered David Hattner's
CD, The Clarinetist Composer. I studied with
Mr. Hattner some years ago and was therefore
curious about his recording. What I received so
surpassed my (high) expectations that I'd like
to put in a few good words for it. As the title
indicates, the selections were composed by
clarinetists. So it's not surprising that they
provide a lot of opportunities to showcase the
facets of clarinet playing which appeal to
clarinetists. Mr. Hattner takes full advantage
of these opportunities: his sound is gorgeous,
his technique is stunning, and his musicianship
is superb. After multiple listenings, there are
still places in the recording where his playing
gives me goosebumps! In addition, the liner
notes are well-written, informative, and
interesting.
Between family and job, the time I have for
music is pretty limited. What there is of
it, for better or worse, is usually spent
practicing and not listening to recordings.
But for a previous acquaintance with
Mr. Hattner, I would have missed ordering
this CD. I'm really glad I didn't.

The complete liner notes to 'The Clarinetist Composer' are on the website (we had to reduce to fit the booklet). You can also read what some others have had to say about the cd on the new "Testemonials" page. We are still working out some technical issues with sound samples, but I will post a notice here when they are finally available, if anyone is interested.
In any event, it is gratifying to hear some positive feedback on my first cd.
