Has anyone tried the Patricola C? I tried an A and an Eb at IMS a couple of months ago, but didn't get to try a C and am going to purchase a C this week. I'm considering one of these if I like the way it plays. Intonation and key action, along with craftsmanship are my priorities.
I know that people like the way the little Eb rosewood model plays, and I'm thinking perhaps rosewood for mine.

I own a grenadilla Patricola CL-7 for several years, now. I wasn't as good a player when I got it as I am now. Now, I think the throat tones are very thin sounding. I think the notes above altissimo D may be a little flat and are definitely harder to get out than on my Evette - Schaeffer Bb. Low F and E may not be in precise tune, either. These are impressions I have by hearing myself, not checking against a meter.

One other thing: I have learned from this board that people tune their instruments other than by pulling out at the barrel, i.e, by pulling out at other joints. Should you feel the need to pull out at the middle joint on this clarinet, you can't. The bridge mechanism is very finicky. If it's not in the right place, the key on the upper joint between the first and second rings or the one on the lower joint between the first two rings there won't fully close. And then, when the bridge is adjusted properly, the right forefinger Bb / Eb lever just misses its "stop" so you have to be light with it. This is after several adjustments in the shop. Sometimes, when I bring the clarinet in for something else, my repair guy detects the need for an adjustment here and just goes ahead and does it. WW and BW, where I bought it, claims C's manufactured by others have this problem and it is simply an imperfect design.

I recently purchased a Grenadilla Patricola C for a performance of the Schubert Octet, and was very happy with the performance of the horn. The intonation and eveness are excellent. I do have a Patricola Rosewood E-flat, which I like very much, and was planning on getting a Rosewood C. But I tried 2 Grenadilla and 2 Rosewood from IMS, and liked the response of this particular Grenadilla the best. I look forward to using it in orchestral situations.

Thanks for the input. I'm going to talk to Lisa today and see if I can get some sent on approval and see what I think.
Smiles!

To Steve: I have a Buffet E-11 C clarinet and tune by pulling the middle joint, as needed, without any problems with the mechanism.

I just got it a couple of hours ago and have only played it for about 10 min. Need to let it "settle" and all. But, seems like a really nice little clarinet for the money (under $2,000.00). It has the extra Eb/Ab key like my Festival and nice workmanship. I haven't checked the intonation yet, but it did come with two barrels and that should help the "general" tuning situation.

Brenad, are you sure there isn't a Buffet (demo) R-13 in C anywhere? mw
