Ok, i am curious..and this question has probably been asked a few times...but can you buy a standard 17 keyed 6 ring clarinet and have it modified into a full boehm system clarinet? or is that just a stupid idea lol

Thanks.
Kyle

The joint length of the FB and the 17/6 are different lengths. Sorry, it would be very impracticle if not impossible.

Please view the photos of the 1941 Buffet Literature. You will see that it is not possible.

And even if it was possible it would require so much re-building of the horn that it would probably be cheaper to just go out and buy one. FBs are nice, though.

Kyle -

The only fairly easy modification would be to add the Ab/Eb lever for the left little finger, and even that would involve some surgery to the left little finger keys to fit in the new posts.

Adding the left hand fork Eb/Bb mechanism would mean adding a ring for the left ring finger, and also drilling the small, new hole for intonation, remaking the left hand ring mechanism and slightly filling in the left middle and ring finger holes.

Adding the articulated C#/G# mechanism would mean filling in the present C#/G# hole, cutting back the outside of the bottom of the upper joint, lengthening the tenon, deepening the lower joint socket, drilling the new hole and making new keys, including the right-hnd ring keys.

Adding the low Eb would mean splicing on more wood at the bottom of the lower joint, making the new key, re-making the support for the right little finger keys to fit the new key in, and, probably, changing the taper of the lower joint bore, plus surgery on the bell.

The ultimate cost -- much more than buying a new full-Boehm instrument.

Such things can be done. Steve Fox will make an extension down to written low C to fit an existing A clarinet, but for the most part it means simply adding on new keys and not remaking existing ones.

As a practical matter -- fugedaboudit.

Best regards.

Steven Fox also makes the low C extensions for Bb clarinets.
