After I got my buffet, I quit playing my second horn. I only use it for marching but other people in my band have been borrowing my horn throughout concert season while their horns have been in the shop or whatever. In any case, I want to have my horn overhauled before next fall, just to make sure everything is working right and whatever. How much does an overhaul usually cost and what all do they do?

Complete overhauls may run as high as $200.00, depending on many factors, cork pads, etc. Usually, ALL the corks and pads are replaced, keys are polished and the labeling is repainted. Lots of other adjustments--key alignment, spring tension, etc.--may also be done. The instrument should come back looking brand new. As a professional player, however, I seldom get "complete" overhauls but opt, rather, for the "playing condition" treatment where only the necessary repairs are performed, rather than a lot of unnecessary work--such as replacing a lot of good pads and joint corks that may not need replacing. After a "playing condition" workover, your instrument may not look brand new, but it will play like it is. Your call.......................$$$$$$$$$$$$$

We distinguish between a repad and an overhaul in our shop. On a repad all pads and corks are replaced, and spring tension is adjusted. Cost: $149.00 plus parts. An overhaul is more extensive: polishing of keys and posts, new corks, new pads, cleaning and polishing of the bore and wood, new springs, swedging of keys to take up loose play, pivot screw hinge rods are fitted with mylar spacers if necessary to take up play (rather than the older way of reaming out the seats in the posts),and yes we reapply gold trademark to the labels. Price: $210 plus parts. Cork/leather pads are extra.
A playing condition starts at $39 plus $3 per pad, $6 per joint cork.

Hmm, how much do those gold trademark labels cost alone? Hehe. Mine faded away in 2 months! Dang those German Buffets! (E-line) Can you do it in different colors? That would be fun to have blue or green labels!
