I would like to buy a second hand Eb clarinet, one that's not too expensive. I'm going to Uni next year to study Music, and I know that it'd be useful for orchestras and bands and stuff (since at the moment when i need one i have to borrow a friend's (she's a pro). I've got a pair of Buffet RC's - is it worth getting a matching Eb? will it make any difference?
And what about plastic ones? (they're an awful lot cheaper!)
Any advice welcome!
Thanks, Laura

If your talking about Eb Sapranos then I can help. I bought one a while back, and I love it. I would sugest since you are studying music, and if your looking toward like being a musician, or a teacher, then yes, I would get a wood. If you are looking just to play it for fun.... and just as a seperate instrument, and your not plannnig on really doing anything to big on it, then I would suggest a plastic. Yeah, plastic is cheaper, but wood sometimes make the best tone

Well, I've only played a Selmer Bundy (plastic) Eb but it sounds nice enough. A new mouthpiece made a world of difference in both pitch and tone.

I play on a Noblet, so far its had a crack through all of it and I have to finger a high F to get a high E......So in short, do not get a Noblet!

If you buy a Buffet, i would suggest an RC or RC Prestige. They play better than their R-13 Eb's.
Patricola makes one of the best Eb clarinets available new today for about the price of an R-13 Bb.
If you're looking for something around $500-$750 an old Selmer Series 9 Eb is a very good buy.
But regardless.... go with wood.

Any WOODEN instrument may crack. It is not a function of the brand. Get the crack fixed. You are not being sensible in continuing to play on a cracked horn. Also you may need a different mouthpiece or reed or combination. My Selmer Bundy was quite sharp until I got a different mouthpiece.
You cannot judge by a single sample. Now if you had 10 of them that were that way you would have a basis to make such a categorical statement.

I like the RC Eb (currently I'm playing with a RC Bb)
better than the R13Eb or the yamaha864 Eb...cant remem the model num for this.
have anyone tried the patricola Eb??
I recently purchase an cheap old plastic Buescher Eb. it sound nice enuff with a reasonable mouthpiece (i use a 5RV Eb here with cut off vandoren V12 Bb 3.5). the keywork is not as good as the modern one. but for doubling, it serve its purpose jus fine.
personally I think plastic is OK if its not your primary instrument. however, if you have the $, go for the wood
