 Adult Music Camp

Anyone out there ever hear of an adult music camp? I went to Idyllwild when I was a kid and had a blast. I think I'd feel a little silly trying to sneak in with the teen agers (at 41) but I'd love to get that week or two of intense playing again. Just thought I'd check with you all.

There are two that I have had personal experiance with: 1) The International Music Camp in the International Peace Gardens on the border of N. Dakota and Manitoba. It only goes for about five days in early August, but offers many playing venues, clinics and private lessons; 2) the Birch Creek Music Center just outside of Egg Harbor, Door County, Wis. offers camps for school age through adult campers (don't panic, there are dorms) and provides two weeks of INTENSE playing--rehearse with the "pros" for a series of public concerts each week (one session of Orchestra and two sessions of Jazz). Each session runs for two weeks in July and early August. I have taught at both of these music camps and can personally recommend either one. The big difference is only how much playing and practicing you really want to do. The International Music Camp is big enough so that it can accept entire adult band groups, from one town, for example, and provide a break in the cost if the band plays a concert. There is an actual campground for those that want to bring their own campers and tents. There are also dorms. The Birch Creek Music Center is more individualized and limits its "campers" by instrument to fill pre-determined ensembles. No campground on site, just dorms. Hope this helps a bit. Good luck!!!!!

The camp you speak of still exists (Wildwood). The'Junior' session is still in Idyllwild, and the 'Senior' (High School) session is now in Running Springs.

I noticed that several of the staff played in the final performances. Maybe you could get yourself signed-up for next summer on staff?

I've misplaced the e-mail contact info, but Keith & June Nelson (the same directors) can be contacted at P.O. Box 50385 Irvine, CA 92619 (949) 551-2877.
