 Jazz Clarinet MP
Author: Daniel Goodell

Hello, i'm an alto sax player who wants to play some clarinet, but i want to know what would be a good mouthpiece for jazz. The only ones i have tried have not been very loud or bright, so what would be good for this kind of music? Thanks.

Check out Ralph Morgan's jazz models (J5, J6, J7). Available from WW/BW. These pieces can play good and loud and with alot of edge. I use the J7 (.057" tip opening) on my Leblanc LL. You may want to start out with the J5 (.049" tip opening).

I use the VanDoren 5JB also. Nice big sound. You'll need to go with a softer reed on many of these more open mouthpieces.

My vote also goes with Ralph Morgan ; I use the
J5 facing . Ralph has also come out with exact
replicas of Benny Goodmans mouthpieces . Benny's
estate loaned the ORIGINALS to Raplh so that he
could duplicate them . Haven't tried one, yet,
though..

use a softer reed with any old mouthpiece, and that will give you a brighter tone. (like a 2-2 1/2)
