 Tell me about my clarinet.

We have a Rene' Dumont clarinet that has been reworked. The serial number is LA 32812. It plays nicely, however the instructor says it is "flat". Has anyone heard of this brand? Please tell me about it.

Try a different mouthpiece and lig setup. Hopefully in front of a tuner. Try different strength reeds with each setup too. You can print a tuning chart off good ol' sneezy here and use these to check differences with each setup. If just a few notes are flat, it may just need some adjusting (key/pad height).

I vaguely recall the name, prob. as being a "French-sounding" trade name used by an importer, what we call a "stencil". You can "Search the Phorum" for it and maybe turn up more info. Could the LA be "LP"? If it is that old, it may have been built to an A= 435 hertz pitch which is noticeably flat to our now 440-442. If so you will need a shorter barrel or mouthpiece and may find you have to "favor" some notes in playing with others. If you find a shorter mp or barrel [at you local repair shop] be sure to check the inside diameters of mp with bar. and bar with the upper joint, I use a little finger to determine the close match needed. Over the last two years I've restored two Rene Dumont (French-made) wood clarinets, both were decent clarinets, no particular problems with either one. I believe they are "stencil" instruments, and I have no idea who the actual manufacturer was. I'd guess the two I worked on dated from the 40's or 50's. I've also seen on eBay some Italian-made wood and metal clarinets also labelled Rene Dumont.
