Are cane reeds organic and pesticide free? If they aren't, countless hours of putting them in your mouth throughout your life can't be any good for you.

Most do not make the claim of organic, but notably D'Adarrio claims all their reeds are organic and pesticide free, I admit I switched to D'Addario over this issue, not for environmental reasons but because I don't eat pesticides as a general rule:

You could probably argue that any pesticide residue in the reeds would gradually leech out so your exposure is limited especially if you keep reeds for a long time. The only known case of harm so far is to a reed designer at Rico, who presumably had to put fresh reeds in his mouth much more frequently than the rest of us, but yes he did suffer permanent disability AFAIK, which was good enough for me to switch. Been discussed here at length in the past. Rico was later bought by D'Adarrio and is now an organic pesticide-free reed.
Lesser harm from reeds is more likely to be undocumented rather than non-existent, I won't touch a non-organic reed myself. Threw out all my ricos, royals, and vandorens when I found out about this issue. This was just before D'Addario made the switch to all Organic reeds (which was a year or so back). Now I have a whole new collection of reeds from D'Adarrio.
