When I first heard of the "Melody and Madness" radio show from the 1940s, featuring Artie Shaw and Robert Benchley, I wondered how somebody back then concocted a show that seemed to be designed for my tastes.

i will always wonder why artie shaw chose such a difficult key for begin the beguine. the key one step down is a perfect it for clarinet.

He might have chose that key because he liked the sound in that key best.
(That wasn't meant to sound trite.)
I frequently pick random starting notes to play tunes on...sometimes a tune sounds really special in a specific key.
His reasoning might be entirely different - but it would make sense to me.
The song does sound beautiful in that range/scope of the clarinet.
