From the top of my head (while I am on the road):
- Andre Moisan (from Montreal) (a fabulous clarinetist - top level with very interesting repertoire)
- David Veilleux (from Montreal) (in particular, his CD contrasts with Bartok, Stravinsky, Khatchaturnan - extremely well played by a fabulous team)
- Jean-Guy Boivert (from Montreal) (his CD zodiaque has many electro--accoustic pieces for clarinet and something elextronic - the title piece - Zodiaque - is an intersting 12 movement little piece).
- Jerome Summer (from London, Ontario. His latest CD - "Flight fo the nightingale - has Paul Reade's "Victorian Kitchen Garden - played one million time better than Emma Johnson who is a very average clarinesist with a good promoter - but I digress)
- Mark James (from Halifqax), who has a CD celebrating Canadian music for clarinet and piano (average stuff, but a collector item for all of us Cannucks out there).
- George MacDonald (also from Halifax), who has an excellent ASV CD with, on it, the only known recording of the exceptional little piece "the Pied Piper" by Walter Mourrant.
- Francois Houle (from Vancouver): Some classical, some jazz, but much experiment music (yet strictly accoustic). If you like to heard clarinet experiments, he is the guy to watch - Much better in my opinion than Don Byron, who merely reproduces on the clarinet ideas picked from sax players.
- And let's not forget Sherman Friedman (from Montreal), the grand daddy of them all, who has many exceptional CD, and actually has a whole section on this Web site where he answers questions and the most insightful way...
If I were to pick one up from the Canadian contingent, James Campbell is definitely our Canadian Grand Master, up there with the Stoltzman, Leister, Meyer of this world.
The number two would be Andre Moisant. Not well known outside of the French speaking world, but an exceptional artist with originality and creativity. See his CD "A la Gitana" with pieces from everywhere inspired from folk music. This where you can find the only known recording of "Hommage a Manual de Falla" by Bela Kovacks.
If you like experimental music, Francois Houle is a Grand Master. It is hard to describe his music on this web site. But he succeeds in initiating the general public to novel ways of playing the clarinet and making friends in the process. His
Ottawa Jazz Festival concert two years back (one hour, non-stop, all experimental with an audience of jazz lovers but not clarinet fanatics) had EVERYBODY ON HIS FEET ABSOLUTELY MESPERIZED. It was just incredible. His CD "the clamorous alphabet" has some clarinet/vocal pieces that are simply impossible to describe. This is magical stuff. I wish I could get him to Stockholm so that the world see what the clarinet can do.
Valdapenias is well-known in Toronto (especially since his is the TSO principal), and because of Amici (an excellent trio of piano, clarinet and violon). But as a strict soloist, I do not think cuts it.

Shame on me, especially since I know her personnaly, since she is a leader of the ICA taking care of competition, and since she is an top Keltzmer musician speading the gospel (if I can said without getting into trouble) of this interesting music.
And let's not forget her twin sister (yes, she has an identical twin clarinetist sister still living in Montreal and teaching music at the St-Luc High-School) who has a beautiful CD of organ/clarinet sacred music called "le premier jour", still available in Montreal at Archambault. This is great CD if you are looking at playing music in churches. I spoke to Diane about it once she said all the material was stock material bought at a local music store (Archambault Music) with minor adaptions to cater to the organ/clarinet medium. Again, a unique CD with original music out of the beaten path.

The name of the Montreal-based sister is Diane Gingras. Michelle Gingras lives in Ohio now and teaches at Miami University.

Victor Sawa (formerly of Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony & Canadian Chamber Ensemble). I remember clearly the day he told us that we would no longer be taking lessons from him, because he was joining the ranks of "amateur" clarinetists and going on to a new position as conductor in Calgary, Alberta. I don't know where he is now and would love to hear if anyone does know.
