What is your favorite method book for absolute beginners?

I haven't taught beginners for a long time. I am out of touch with them, but will soon have one. What is your favorite method book with some good tunes in it? Is there anything less austere than Klosé?

Essential Elements, same thing school band students use.

I prefer the Accent on Achievement band method. It has much better accompaniment tracks than the other common band methods that I am familiar with. I'm a big fan of having beginners play with backing tracks. It really helps them to solidify their sense of tempo and pitch - and it make things much more real and fun for them. I use MakeMusic to access the tracks, which despite it's annoying inferface, allows one to easiliy change the tempo, etc.

If they are in a band program that will be using AonA then I will go with Standard of Excellence. Using the same book they use at school is a recipe for boredom, in my experience.

I get into simple duets as soon as possible ("Clarinetten Duetten von Anfang" is the book I use at the beginning) and major tetrachords and chromatic patterns. I have a warm-up scale routine that helps to solidify finger placement, and air support.

Klose would be a drag with young students! The Rubank books can be useful for some students - too dry for many. To me the most important thing the first year is that they develop a love for playing. The right band method really helps with that. Getting those fundamentals well established is so much easier when they are also having fun.

Please don't let them use the mouthpiece that comes with the clarinet!

Anders

Ruben,
For absolute beginners, I would use "Easy Steps to the Band". It worked well to get me started in 1959.

Hans

Foundation to Clarinet Playing (Carl Reineke). I started with it in 1964. Takes you from square one to some pretty advanced stuff. Thick book, don't know if it's still in print.
