Oboe newbie

Hello, I'm a seasoned clarinet player doubling on flute with a local marching band here in atlanta. I want to learn oboe as I love the sound of it as I do clarinet and flute. I've been searching the internet for what was suggested by a couple of oboe players the Loree and Fox. These seem to be pretty popular and pretty expensive as well. Looking to get a good used one with left F and low Bb keys. I do have a budget but not willing to choose a cheaper model if it's not a quality instrument. I was told the plastic oboes would be good for those on a budget. Also are the Selmers good or decent oboes. Was also suggested that I use a synthetic Reed for embouchure development. I very briefly played oboe in college many years ago and now 62 was wondering if I'm too old to tackle the oboe. Any advice is welcome. Thanks

I am an oboe family doubler although I've played since '67.

Oboe is difficult to learn on your own so I would find a teacher both to learn technique and finding a decent instrument. A used Fox synthetic oboe would be a good starting choice. Easy and pretty in tune. I have only used my own cane reeds but people are saying good things about the new American scrape Legeres. For better quality cane reeds, you might try those offered by Forrest's. Probably starting with medium soft.

I'm not sure that it's possible to just move a post from one BBoard to another, but this is from a clarinet player with a history on the clarinet board, so it seems appropriate here. I think we have more than a few clarinet-oboe doublers who may have useful advice.

2cekce, you might also post your question yourself on the oboe board. I've noticed a number of clarinet board members who also post there (the same doublers who post here), and it's fairly active, though not as active as the clarinet BBoard is. You might get replies from oboists who aren't clarinetists. There's also a doublers' BBoard on the woowind.org system, but it isn't very active.

Thanks a lot for the response. I was able to post my question on the oboe board and got a few responses with much needed information. Some of those responses came from clarinet players as well.
