What, when and where was your initial exposure to clarinet that ultimately found you playing it seriously enough that a forum like this would be interesting to you?
In first grade I clearly remember the music room in the basement of my elementary school. One day we each received a plastic recorder in a corduroy case.
I suspect in today's dollars, landed (forget tariffs) it is probably $2.45 a unit, but to me, the instrument might as well might have been made out of gold for all I brought to the table for me.
The ability to express myself with music...I was hooked, instantly. And when real instruments started in 4th grade clarinet seemed like the natural transition.
52 years later it still consumes me.
What's your story; I know they must vary. My understanding is our moderator, (he can elaborate or correct me) with more tech than clarinet savvy, developed interest in clarinet as a way to better bond with his son who played.
"Three trillion" posts later this board still exists!

I was fascinated by music as a young child. I wanted to find out how it worked, wanted to be able to read music, and considered lots of instruments. I liked the piano, but that seemed very impractical to carry around. Then I liked violin, but I thought that would push me in the classical corner. Thought about accordion, too, but never took that idea serious.
Then, one day, I was helping with a local traditional jazz festival. I drove the bands around, managed the various stages in the bars they were playing etc. My eye fell on the clarinet and suddenly I saw the solution: classical, jazz, easy to carry: I went for the clarinet.
Two of my friends (scouting) were member of the local wind band, one of them played sax. I asked him if his teacher also teached clarinet and he did. That got me involved in wind band music, which was never my goal, but I stayed in that world for 40 years now, and never went for improvisation or pure classical repertoire.
PS. After several years of fast learning, I started to hate the instrument because it appeared so difficult to play at a higher level. I nevertheless stayed with the clarinet because I thought if I switch over to an 'easier' instrument it will take another five years to get where I am now. I decided to marry the clarinet for better or worse.

Luuk
