I am supposed to play all the solos from the 1st and 2nd mvt of Brahms symphony 3 and I am not sure if I have all the solos in my excerpt book. I would GREATLY appreciate if anyone could tell me how many solos are in those 2 mvts!!!

THANKS SO MUCH!!!

I'm unsure what you are learning these solos for, and what excerpt book you are working from, so I'd have to suggest getting the actual part.

If you call Kalmus in Florida, or Luck's Music Library in Michigan, they will sell it to you. I'm not sure that one piece will meet their minimum order though.

Kalmus also sells what they term "albums" which are collections of principal parts for various instruments of different pieces. The album which applies to you is right around $15, and contains all 4 Brahms Symphonies and both Piano Concertos.

In terms of "solos" and what is "exposed" in the clarinet part, I'd just listen to a recording, and when clarinet has the lead melody/part, I'd practice that. The opening 22 measures are important, are is the section at rehearsal C (with the triplet on beat 4 of the first full measure), and then toward the end. There are times when you just have to chime in and play a few notes. . .

There is a change from A to B flat (or the other way round) in the first movement where you don't have enough time to do it!!!! It is all exposed so you cannot drop bits.

Either learn one of the bits for the other instrument or try doing the change without chaging barrels (ie. barrel/mp combo on both).

In general, the difficulty with Brahms 3 is not technical, it is staying in the right place and making successful instrument changes. Worth the tears though.
