I saw on an auction site that Buffet is offering a "pocket clarinet." My first thought was: How would you get reeds for it? Key of D.

Sure it’s only $209, but then you have to immediately take it to your tech and spend $350 for a proper set-up.
I don’t play Buffet, but I’ve heard that about them somewhere.

If this was made from a synthetic material and priced around $50 US I imagine they'd sell a lot more of them. As a starter instrument for young kids they are pretty useful (and not an original concept) but the problem is that many students "out-grow" the instrument very quickly and will be progressing to a full clarinet. The lower price of a synthetic (and keyless!) instrument enables EITHER 1) it to be bought as an introductory instrument without significant investment OR 2) an educational institution to buy a number of them for students to start on.

I've seen one. The dealer said he couldn't work out who it was aimed at. An instrument in C could join school recorder ensembles, but D? The price is very high for such a limited instrument - not that much cheaper than a proper clarinet.
- and the Chinese websites sell what looks to be the same thing for £10.68.
