I just had my R-13 repaired by the local repairman. He wound up changing the venting and fixing keys that didn't need to be fixed! (&#@#@!) If I were to have it brannennized would it be worth it? How much would it cost? Where could I get it done? What does brannennizing mean?

New R-13 Service is $400. I take it you have had your R-13 for a time (don't know how long). My guess would be $400 to $450. Uf you are in CT (by judging your email) you could take it to Jimmy Van in NYC by train and see if he would do a "play condition repair" .... then he could fix the things you don't like as you SHOW if the problems. Play condition repairs don't cost anywhere near as much. Prices I hear for play condition are $50 to $125. Caveat: Play Condition won''t work when you got bad cork job, lots of key movement (needs swedging which should generally be fixed on the way OFF in an overhaul), lots of key-post problems, and finally where you got BAD SUCTION due to bad pad job.
Play condition takes into account a few problems ... several pads. several keys, I think you gte my drift.
Possibly you are overreating, too. Been there done that.

I just got my clarinet "brannenized" and it came back yesterday. I plays WONDERFULLY, better than new. I've had this clarinet for about 2 years and got a complete overhaul, which was $485 if that's at all helpful to you. Though depending on how picky you are about how your clarinet plays and how much money you want to spend you may want to wait a little. Especially if you just had a bunch of pads replaced.

Do you mean--"changing the venting"--that they undercut some tone holes without your permission? If someone did that to one of my clarinets, they would be purchasing me a new one which I would then have Brannennized at their exspense. In any case, the work of the Brannens is well worth the expense--like making a BMW out of your Ford. Good luck!!!!!

I would agree with William. I have played dozens and dozens of clarinets (mine, students, and customers) over a period of 25 years before and after Bill and Linda had worked on them. In each and every case, the clarinet played at least 25% better in every respect after they had worked on it. And that's starting with what I would have called a rather mediocre clar. In the cases of first rate horns, the improvements in all areas of how the clarinet plays is in the 75 -100% range - twice the horn when they worked their magic on them.
So many years of success with the great clarinetists all over the world speaks volumes. As far as price goes, I suppose it depends on how serious one is about the quality of instrument they want in the end. In the Brannens case, I and many other professionals have considered them a God-send for decades.
Don't pass up the opportunity.

I am a music major and am entering my junior year. I will be giving my junior recital in the spring. Do you guys recommend that I have this work done? I bought my clarinet new in March.

I am recommending to my son (also a music major entering his junior year) that he have the Brannens work on his clarinets this year. Scheduling the "downtime" is always the problem ...

I've used people who do similar work to the Brannens and been disappointed every time. So, this time I sent my new Festival to them and was not sorry I spent the money. It's a very, very worth while investment in the future of your playing. Linda asked me to write down how the instrument played, giving attention to each note--left and right hand, etc. Then, what about the key action, etc.? The Festival was $450.00 plus shipping (and I recommend overnighting due to the heat this time of year), and worth every penny. I wish I had had them to do my Prestige--Bob Gardner probably wouldn't own it now.
They really go over the instrument and do a complete technical inspection and adjustment that is nothing short of supurb! We Americans have come to accept less than acceptable work because we have forgotten what true craftsmen who take pride in their work are like. The Brannens are like the old-world craftsmen who genuinely care about both the artist and the instrument.
