I'm out to buy a new mouthpeice, and I'm wondering on some of your opinions on what a good mouthpeice is. I know that a lot of people talk about Vandoren 5 RV and 5RVLs, but I appricate your opinions on this matter.

How much time 'ya got? How much money 'ya got? What's your axe? What kind of music to 'ya play? All of these are questions that you need to answer and you can probably find a discussion about any of these aspects in the archives. It is never an easy process and there are as many opinions as there are players. Good luck and happy hunting!

I got up to about $70-$80, I have a Buffet R-13 Vintage, I got lots of time. I like to play on harder reeds (Vandoren 3 1/2 - 4s), I got lotes of time. I play classical music, in an orchestra and a wind ensemble setting.

Try a Vandoren VD2,3 or 4 with White Master reeds tied on with twine. Works for me and lots of people in Europe.

What Dave is too modest to say is that he makes some mouthpieces (okay, refaces existing blanks) to a high standard. Not too much money either.
He made a nice 'un for me months backt that is terrific for chamber stuff.
It takes well to a #3 1/2 V12 on my Master Model (cheapo R13).
I STRONGLY recommend Chris Hill as another maker (he has the time and inclination to hear out your interests), search his name in the archives.
You will need to open your wallet a little wider to get something from Clark Fobes, but his stuff is terrific.
Me, I come back to the Vandoren M13 Profile 88 for it's balance of resistance and sonority. It may be a wee open for your desired reed strength.

Greg Smith. I have had 4 or 5 people DEMAND to know what mouthpiece I was playing. They never did that with my Robert Borbeck 13 (whioch is a very nice mouthpiece)
Playing an Old Ched #1 .... I am in love weeks afterward. Just bought a second backup (I lived in FEAR of damaging #1). Smith is a household word at Interlochen (where Richard Hawkins just left)!
My Greg Smith mouthpiece tunes _very_ well. I had Greg pick out several Chadash barrels --- then I chose from the lot. WOW. I believe my cost for the Old Ched #1 & Chadash Barrel was $300 + shipping. Check with Greg on prices.
Big, BIG PLUS ... Greg's mouthpieces are REED FRIENDLY. He designs them to work with the Vandoren V-12 3 1/2 reeds. I had been using Vandoren V-12 #4 with my Borbeck mouthpiece. By dropping a 1/2 strength I find that there are more useable reeds _out_ of the box in Vandoren (my teacher agrees on this, too, although we have no factual evidence)

I also play on an R-13 vintage and use 3 1/2-4 reeds, and I use a Clark Fobes CF+ mouthpiece. I went through about 8 of them and LOVE the one I picked out. But they're a little expensive, something like $160 maybe. This may be more than you want to spend. But no matter what, I would reccomend trying out a lot. Even ones of the same brand can play very differently. Good luck!

I'm a Greg Smith fan as well. I have his wooden and Kaspar models and am very happy with them. But, if you want a good stock mouthpiece for under $100.00 for your R-13, the Vandoren M13Lyre is a good one. You can get them for about $60.00 or so from woodwind and brasswind and other online discount stores. I think Brook Mays carries them as well.
