I am considering buying a new B flat clarinet. My budget is about the 3,000-4,000 USD range, give or take a hundred dollars or two. I am mostly trying to choose between a Yamaha custom model and the Backun Q series. However, I do not know which Yamaha clarinet would be the best for me, and I have no way of trying them (or the Q series) out because there are no stores that carry them near me. What I need in the clarinet is versatility and durability in addition to the necessities, such as good sound, response, etcetera. These are my questions:
Is there any way in which I could try these instruments out without traveling to another state?
Which Yamaha custom model do you think is the best in your opinion?
Should I be considering other clarinets (like the Uebel RĂªve)?
Ultimately, is the Backun Q series or one of the Yamahas better?
I use a Vandoren M30 mouthpiece, a Rovner Dark ligature, and Vandoren Traditional reeds.
Thanks for your advice!

With your budget, there are many other clarinets to be considered.
In order to suggest a model, I'd need more info:
1. What kind of music are you playing/going to play?
2. Is the re-sale value important to you?
3. What is your preference in sound/tone quality and in the response? Do you like the clarinet to sound bright or dark/soft? Are you OK playing with some resistance or do you like the new clarinet to respond easy?
4. What is your playing level? Are you in a community band or symphony orchestra? What pieces can you play confidently?
Providing some background info will allow board members to give you a better advice.

My advice? Find an old YCL 82 Custom OR the YCL 62 model (basically, an R13 Prestige or an R13, but better tuning and consistent build) and pay for a complete overhaul.... will still be way cheaper than a new clarinet and you'll have all the clarinet you will ever need. Spend the left over money on lessons, not a $600 mouthpiece.
