 H&B ligature opinion?
Author: Radovan

Hello. Has anyone tried the Herouard&Benard M80 standard two-screw ligature? They also manufacture the original Bonade ligature (they bought the license from Leblanc). I ordered a Bonade ligature a few days ago, but they sent me their H&B M80 by mistake. It cost about 25 USD, and it was absurd for me to return it for a replacement, because the postage is half the price of the ligature. Easier to blow than my current ligature versa x.

I probably have purchased every ligature (or one representing a design type) there is and have determined that despite some working and some not, the bottom line is that the NON-Inverted style (like the Herouard-Bernard) is by far the best design. It turns out that the most important characteristic is being able to EVENLY tighten the ligature OVER the reed. Now, you can tighten as loose as you want or as tight as you want (barring stripping the screws of course) and as long as that force is equal for BOTH screws, the reed will perform amazingly well.

I do have their chrome Bonade and the vertical bars make a minute difference but not one that really stands out. I cannot over emphasize that ANY non inverted ligature properly tightened upon the reed itself will out perform ANY inverted ligature (of virtually every price point).

I know a pro player based in Denmark (and playing a lot in the UK) who uses this as the "go to" ligature and doesn't bother with all the more expensive options. And wins auditions.

A ligature is just one variable. There are many other 'components' that create the sound and response: the player, the MP, the reed, the clarinet and the ligature.
Changing just one variable will change the sound and response.
One can guess which variable affects the sound and response the most...
