I recently obtained a Buffet attache case which I will use to "house" two Bb's.
Am curious why Buffet makes the cases so you have to leave the bell on the lower joint. AND...isn't that bad for the cork? Should I take them apart every so oftern and "grease them up?'

I do not like to store them assembled but lots of people that I know have cases that require such storage and seem to experiance no problems. I would recommend, like you suggested, occassional greasings, but even more important, cleaning the moisture from the bell socket after each playing. I have always been meticulous about doing this and in 45 yrs of playing, have never had a socket or tendon crack--or any other piece for that matter. Good clarineting and no cracking.

I have heard a suggestion from different people that .... it is best to leave the connection between the L/J & the Bell slightly open (or "ajar" if you were thinking of a door). it is correct that attention should be paid to the cork to see that it stays moist.
on a separate point, I have heard the very best technician's & pro say that as long as the Bell doesn't fall off of it's "own volition" .... fuggeddaboudit !

I have the same case and I was told by a repairman to pull apart the bell and lower joint in the case. The clarinets still fit in the case with the two sections slightly apart and it will save the cork.

I have a double case like that too. I always make sure to leave the bell and lower joint a little bit seperated. Doing this makes it easier to get the two pieces apart. When I first got my clarinets they came in the double case and they were put all the way together, it took a lot of work to separate the pieces. So anyway, leave them a little bit separated and make sure you take the pieces apart at least once a week, grease them as needed.

I have the same case as well, and I echo what everyone says.... I never leave my clarinet in the case assembled, the clarinet fits perfectly fine if you take off the bell and leave a little space to let air through.
