Hello everyone!
I have a question regarding a sizeable sheet music investment that I'm about to make. As I look through the different publishers' catalogues, I see that for the same piece of music, there are different prices. Is it better to be frugal with my purchase or go for the more expensive publisher? I know there are various editions, but I have no idea which editions and/ or publishers are more correct/preferred/standard. This purchase is going to augment my library with the staples of the clarinet repetoire based on the threads I've searched here, my teacher's recommendations, and a few pieces that sound interesting.

Wow what a great question. I think everyone comes across this same problem when we want to purchase a particular piece of music.....which edition to get?????? I would definitely start with your teacher. Good teachers are a wealth of information and generally have experience regarding several different editions. Happy Shopping!

In cases where there are multiple publishers to chose from, i usually go with the European publishers:
German
------------
C F Peters (And subsidiaries)
Breitkopf & Härtel
Baerenreiter
French
----------
Durand
Henri Lemoine
etc.
I usually stay away from Leduc unless it's something exclusively published by them, or if i have a chance to see their edition and like it over others.
These publishers are often more pricey than American and British publishers, but they tend to be more accurate, or sometimes, were even the original publishers for alot of the standard rep.
My flack with alot of US publishers is the format that they print. I find it hard to read, even if it is cleaner looking. It looks more and more Finale-ish and less traditional looking. Sometimes notes are spaced weird, there are more mistakes, or pieces go out of print all of the sudden.
Almost every year i make it to either ClarinetFest, or if not, Iowa City, and can either shop at Eble (in Iowa) or Luyben (at ClarinetFest). And i usually spend over $100 per trip. During the year, when i can't go in person, i usually order from Luyben just because the have the most extensive published catalog of clarinet music. I'm willing to bet Luyben's gotten enough money from me in the last two years, that i could have bought that R-13 Vintage or Mac G4 733 i've been lusting for.
