 Muczynski and Khachaturian
Author: Samantha

I've recently discovered two pieces which, I think, are both fantastic. Muczynski Time Pieces and the Khachaturian Trio for Clarinet, Violin and Piano. Any comments on these would be greatly appreciated: history, recordings, etc. Thanks!

I do not much about "Time Piece", but I am a big fan of the Khatchaturian. This piece is one of the big three of the piano, violon and clarinet medium, the other two being Bartok's contrasts and Stravinsky's Histoire du Soldat. There are many excellent recordingsof the Khatchaturian with new ones appearing every month (it seems that recording the big three is a most for must young clarinetists). My favorite recordings so far:

Cupper (with several other interesting pieces of so-called Russian music)
Amici (in a recording called Constrast with the other 2 on it).

My trio is in the middle of practicing the Khatchaturian and we LOVE it! I can't play it enough. There is another trio for CL, VLN, Piano by Peter Schickele - anyone try that one? (Can't remember the title at the moment) It's a quirky, kinda fun trio to us.

We did the Bartok just a few months ago, we're working on the Khachaturian now and the Stravinsky will be next. I'd love to put a chamber recital together with those three pieces -- a little tiring, but it would be fun!

To Samantha: I am impressed and envious. You are lucky to have access to two excellent musicians to work this wonderful repertoire. By your e-mail, I deduce that you are a student at University of Wyoming. A little evening of Bartok, Stravinsky and Khatcharurian would set your beautiful mountains on fire. Good luck!

to Lynn: Time, and patience, patience, patience. The individual parts are challenging, so if you have them somewhat prepared before jumping into a group rehearsal it will help. The Bartok is such a hard piece ensemble-wise. You're trying to captured the rugged, brashiness of it yet still keep some semblance of order. Be patient when putting it together. Take the time to decide how you want various parts performed. But, you know, this is true of anything you're trying to get up to performance level. Patience is the key. Good luck to you!!

The Mucznski was recorded on cd by a great clarinetest by the name of Bob Listokin. I think he performed this piece at the ICA convention just prior to this recording. Anyway, You can purchase this cd from Muncy Winds. There are also a few french pieces on this recording that are not recorded very often. Listokin studied with Bonade and graduated first prize from Julliard.
