 Another ebay item question
Author: Azzacca
Date:   2001-08-08 19:25

Ok, it's listed as a no name clarinet, and the bidding is over $100 (20+ bids). If you don't know what brand it is, why would you bid on it?

Does anyone know what brand it actually is?

Azzacca, there is NO good answer to your question.

Perhaps it's a question of value. What is valuable to you, may not be valuable to someone else. The SAME goes for money. Perhaps someone doesn't value their money as much as you do.

OR, perhaps Bidders are mistaken in what is being sold. Bidders run kinda like smoke & fire. Someone THINKS somebody else knows soimething & ... before like the price is artifically inflated. Stocks work like that on Wall Street all the time.

OR, perhaps something that is being sold (of value) is not as obvious in the details.
We see Kaspar mouthpieces going with no name Stencils, or worse, all the time.
In that event, the no-name clarinet is merely "window dressing".

Best,
mw

A theory: It does appear to be a Vito, and it does appear to be wood. The only recent wood Vito I know of is the VSP model, which is supposed to be a relatively decent intermediate-level clarinet and retails new for upwards of $400. If this is the situation, and the clarinet is in good shape, then $100 might be reasonable. Just a theory. Please don't shoot me. I'm certainly not going to bid on it!

It says "KENOSHA" as in Wisconsin, home of Leblanc's USA headquarters and, I believe, where Vitos are manufactured.

Why all the bids? As a great lurker on eBay, this is what I think:

1. Snazzy looking ad. Good display can sell -- especially to the uninitiated.

2. Lots of pictures. See #1. Clarinets without photos do not sell well on eBay.

3. School starts soon. The market is hot right now for student clarinets that at least look like they're in good condition. Cheaper than renting, as some of the ads for those dreadful Chinese-made horns like to point out.

4. Highly experienced seller. The seller has more than ten thousand positive feedbacks (though there are hundreds of negatives).

Did you look at the bid history? The high bidder is the same one that bought several clarinets with keys like the low Eb lever. I think the high bidder has other plans for it, maybe selling to localy.

John, what kind of crystal ball do you use to get all that info?

Bob,
It does not require a crystal ball. It says right on the ad that it is a 7214 and all any dealer has to do is look it up in the Leblanc catalogue and confidential retailer discount schedule.

This clarinet has a different logo at the top of the upper joint. I know that it's a Leblanc. The case gives that away with its latches. Leblanc has another line of clarinets and I'm tempted to say that it's a Hortin, but I'm almost 99% sure that I got the name wrong. It is an excellent clarinet for the money.

You are probably thinking of the brand Holton, which is Leblanc's line of brass instruments. Years ago I believe they marketed some woodwinds under the Holton name, but not anything in recent history. I agree that this is a Vito 7214. If the instrument is in good condition I believe that $100 is a good price...BIG if.

$700 Retail? Going for $100? If the winner knows what he's doing, then he should get himself to a good seller! That's a generous profit off a clarinet.
