 Selmer weight

Could anyone inform the weight of a Selmer Privilege clarinet?

This is relevant since I have a pain condition. Lighter instruments are usually more comfortable.

Thank you.

It's 825g. Plastic instruments will be much lighter than wood, and all within a few ounces of each other, in the neighborhood of 600-700g. I highly recommend using a neckstrap if pain is an issue. It's quite easy to add to any clarinet using something like this:

It would be helpful to know what the "pain condition" is exactly.
Is it thumb pain or shoulder pain? If the first, then a thumb rest modification/re-location may solve the problem.

If the weight is an issue, then use either an RDG BHOB or an ERGObrass support which clips onto a ring fixed to the thumbrest or an adapter that fits over the lower joint socket ring and takes all the weight off your right thumb and arm.

I play on first generation privilege clarinets. I believe the weight is the same with the second generation. My Bb without the mouthpiece weighs 814 grams.

My instruments are slightly heavier than R13’s. My repair tech once measured the side walls out of curiosity and they were a little thicker than standard Buffet. The walls are a lot thinner than the recital model. I do not know about how the Privilege compares to other Selmer instruments.

Since I got a Backun Alpha clarinet, I tend to spend a lot of time practicing with it. It sounds and plays very well, and means I don't wear out my professional instrument as fast. It is lighter than a wooden instrument. And, yes, use a strap if you are having pain, but also make sure you are using proper technique, not overplaying, and not playing with unnecessary tension. And perhaps consider whether some other activities are the real basis of the problem and the clarinet is simply a compounding factor.

Chris P's suggested products are first rate, but i can't help but think that similar weight reduction could be found using an Claricord elastic neck strap, which will give the instrument complete freedom to move, it will just feel lighter, connected to a ring mount from Stephen Fox similar to the one sold with the ERGOBrass product Chris linked.

(See "Neckstrap extention rod (ring mount) about 30% down the linked page.)

A layard clasp https://www.uline.com/Product/Detail/S-13755BL/Badges-and-ID-Cards/Standard-Lanyard-with-Hook-Black is often useful to interface the two prior products. :)

Of course for those with neck pain, Chris' options may be best, supporting the instrument from below rather than this, which supports the instrument from the neck above.
