We bought a used clarinet Yamaha YCL-650 from a reputable dealer for our daughter. She's only had it for a few days. Today, when she was putting it together she noticed that upper joint was a bit sticky and black. She's been very careful and looking after it making sure it's cleaned and dried properly after each use.
I've uploaded photos, does anyone know what this is?
Could it be a previous repair that has failed?

Do you mean the stuff under the flat spring at the bottom? Should be Vaseline or some similar lubricant to help the spring slide easily.

Welcome to the forum.
As Karl says, that looks like an excessive quantity of lubricant on the leaf spring which you can just wipe away, because there only needs to be a very little between the spring and where it slides in the channel .
More of a concern is that the new tenon cork looks completely dry. Did they not give/sell you some cork grease to apply to it for smooth assembly/ disassembly ? If not you should get some together with instruction on how to use it.( this may just be a false impression I'm getting from the photos).
If this is your daughter's first wooden clarinet, then it's important to seek all the related guidance on care a maintenance. You can no doubt find all you need to know by using the search facility on this forum and obviously just ask for any further questions.

We do have grease but have used it a little bit, will apply some more to make sure it's right.

Use only enough grease rubbed well into the cork so that it assembles without a struggle. If that's how it is then you're using the right amounts of grease already....absolutely no need to use more.
