James Kanter studied with his dad, a former L.A. freelancer, and Mitchel Lurie I believe.

Clark Brody (note spelling) and Stanley Hasty both studied with Rufus Aurey at Eastman. Brody then studied privately with Daniel Bonade in New York.
Hasty did not study with Bonade (at least to any great extent).

Rob is correct --- James Kanter did take lessons from his Dad --- daily (in a form) I understand!

It is my understanding that Hasty did study with McLane at some point in time. When I studied with Lee Gibson, (a Hasty student), Lee would sometimes talk about Hasty and a legacy through McLane??? I can remember Gibson once saying that McLane was, in his opinion, the "father" of the American school of clarinet. It's ashame that McLane died of cancer at the ripe old age of 44.
Brody was claimed as a student of Bonade (a significant feat), but probably studied with as many of the great players of his day as he could. He was always interested in what others had to say about clarinet. In the later Marcellus master classes, both Marcellus and Brody were often caught discussing who they considered the great teachers were and what each brought to the art of playing clarinet.
Aurey had to have had a profound affect on all of these men.
It would be great to have all of the "when, who and where" info??? Somebody out there has to know.........

I used to take lessons from Jim Kanter's dad - a wonderful man! I learned so much from him in regards to clarinet AND life.

Lynn, my daughter idolizes Jim (& after only spending a day with him & Debby) No doubt she would revere Jim's father. From the stories I have heard, Jimj's greatness was in the "making" for many years! I wish we all knew a little more about Jim's Dad. Can Jim's Dad play Golf as well? <grin> Best, mw
