 Weiner vs. Poppa's Music

Does anyone know what the difference between these two companies are?

I've purchased, like many of you, from Weiner Music for years, first through printed catalog and mail order before the days of the internet to today where I order online.

I use to think that Poppa's Music might be reserved for purchases made in person at the Mineola store, or instrument purchases but I'm not sure.

TIA

"Poppa's" IS the name of the brick and mortar store. The first time I drove there many many years ago I passed it four times looking for Weiner Music, because the store front looks like a tiny drum store. The physical store is much longer front to back than wide, AND the inventory is ALL in a basement hauled up in an dumbwaiter.

Thanks Paul.

I live within driving distance of the store and appreciate what you are saying.

Purchases I've made in store have in fact been to Poppa's Music, but orders I've placed online and then told Fred's sister to hold for me for pickup, so as to save on postage, have been credited to Weiner Music, as those are mailed to me, when I don't drive to the store, from online purchase.

Interestingly enough it was my experience that some of the prices of the same product can differ between the two business entities--no joke: not by much, by differ nonetheless.

I wonder why they separate things that way. Maybe so they can better track things like school instrument rentals (presumably a Poppa's transaction) from the online/mail order side of their business.

I'd ask them, but it's none of mine (business that is.) :)

There are various reasons that businesses do that kind of thing. I don't know all the ins and outs of running a shop, but have known of brick and mortar stores that have retail and rental parts of the business that are run as separate businesses by the same folks under the same roof.

I believe A&G Music and Best Instrument Repair, at the same location in Oakland, CA may have a similar dual identity and purpose, sales & rentals vs. repair. (They - It - no longer have an active web site - and not to be confused with Best Music, also in Oakland, which closed completely pre-Covid.

And a follow up - in chatting with a friend I just learned that A&G / Best permanently closed last week on 6/14/24. AFAIK, there no longer are any brass/wind repair shops in Oakland. House of Woodwinds in San Ramon closed in 2020. I believe Union Music in San Francisco https://www.unionmusiccompany.com/ sent repair work to A&G/Best; perhaps some of the repair folks who worked in Oakland will move to SF?

Here's what I think know about places to get a clarinet fixed in the SF Bay Area. No endorsements, just links to web sites.

In SF now is Daniel Deitch https://www.danieldeitch.com/

In Albany is Wind & Brass https://www.windandbrassmusic.com/.

In Berkeley Forrests Music specializes in double reeds but has some clarinet supplies and perhaps does repairs https://www.forrestsmusic.com.

In San Rafael is Anthony's Woodwind Corner https://www.anthonyswoodwindcorner.com/ and The Magic Flute https://www.themagicflute.com/

Do you know of more?
