Is my B&H Imperial a 926 or not
Author: Janice G

Dear all, I play a Boosey and Hawkes b flat soprano, serial number 36719, which dates it to 1944 or 1945, depending on which list you use. I've attached photos of all the joints. The barrel is unmarked but has the signature smooth tenon rings. The upper joint and the bell have the word "imperial" above the B&H logo and the words "Boosey and Hawkes" below the logo. The lower joint only has the serial number.

Jennifer Brand's thesis on Boosey and Hawkes has an extensive table of which models were produced at any given time, along with the lower and higher serial numbers for that model. I can't reconcile this with my instrument. Can anyone shed any light on this? I should add that I am very happy with my clarinet but it would be nice to know its exact pedigree.

Many thanks,

Janice

It is an Imperial, although the 926 number was added in the 1950s.

Just putting this link to Jennifer Brand's thesis here for easy finding:

I just last year sold a 926 (with interesting pedigree, but that's not relevant here) to a student, and I have to say that if it had been paired with an A clarinet I would have seriously considered it replacing my current pair (of Buffets). This one had a couple of age related repair issues, but absolutely wonderful sound and response.

Thanks Chris. Good to be certain.

Donald, I completely agree about the sound and response. Thanks.

Janice
