I have a bass clarinet that goes down to a low C and I am too short for it. I have to sit on a phone book to play. Well, I am going to college this year and I was wondering if anyone had any "lighter" suggesions as to what I should do about my vertigal challenge.

I saw somebody who played a contra who carried her own stool with her. That isn't going to be lighter than the phone book though.
Hmm...I wonder if they have booster seats for adults.
Will have to surf....

I play EEb contra in one group and for that I carry a couple of thick styrofoam blocks around (cut so that they fit in the instrument case) along with a thin foam seat cushion to put on top. I use two pieces of hard styrofoam (rather than just a single piece) so that I can adjust the height of the "stack" somewhat to match the chair I happen to get. A portable stool would be nice, but it's a lot to lug around.

When I have to sit down and play the EEb contra I either tilt it and use a strap or I double up chairs. I think a strap is considerably lighter than a phone book.

Perhaps a pillow or two? Lighter (hopefullly) and useful for those rehearsals when you're completely ignored by the director and need some sleep!

Well since I live in Dallas, a Stool is actually a lot lighter than a phone book :P .... I dunno I guess I'm just lucky being tall (I went to state and played concert season on EEb Contra, and actually had to use a Peg because it was still short)

I'm rather vertically challenged myself. I did the phone book thing for a while too, and it was funny, but the phone book was just too heavy to be carrying around with me. I tryed doubling chairs, but sometimes they slip, and it always surprised me. Now I play on a neck strap, and sit on the very edge of the chair and slant the instrument under me. That works the best so far. Hope I helped!

My community band keeps a stool in the closet for such occurances. They've seen enough bass/contra/etc players come through, and everyone has a different preference. When i played bass regularly for them, I used it. They would load it on the equiptment truck for jobs and kept it in the closet, depending on what the schedule for the week was. We do the same in my high school, actually.. Maybe one of your groups could do this..?

Maybe if you're practicing in a music building you could find the stools that bass players use to borrow.
