The Closest Instrument Related To A Clarinet Is ...

... not a saxophone. Never has been, never will be.

It's any wind instrument that has a cylindrical bore closed off at one end, overblows the odd harmonic series and the fundamental register sounds a whole 8ve lower than an equivalent length open pipe (eg. flute or recorder) or conical bore instrument (eg. oboe or sax).

In the case of the clarinet and other single or double reed woodwind instruments with cylindrical bores, the tone generator is the closed end.

The single reed mouthpiece does not define the instrument classification as belonging to the same family, even though clarinets and saxes both being single reed instruments generally tend to get lumped together because of that minor detail despite them being completely unrelated to one another in every other aspect.

Change my mind.

And on the flip side, all conical (expanding) bore woodwind instruments coupled with either a single or double reed tone generator are all related to shawms.

Added to the fact that keywork and fingering systems do not determine the physical nature of the instrument as the same type of instrument can have different keywork and fingering systems.

Also the material they're made from isn't a determining factor in how they play as they can be fashioned from any material deemed suitable for the job and the shape of the bore has the biggest impact on how they behave.

Taking no issue with your logic Chris, what instrument, if any, might you feel is most closely related to the clarinet?

As a joking aside, Russianoff often equated the clarinet to a "jealous mistress," which of course isn't an instrument in the musical sense, but perhaps one of authority or control. ;)

Anything with a cylindrical bore coupled with either a double reed or single reed tone generator, therefore Highland bagpipe drones and practice chanter, duduk, aulos, hichiriki, kortholt, Renaissance rackett, crumhorn, cornemuse, ... I'm sure there's plenty more folk and other woodwind instruments that fit the bill.

It took me quite a while to learn this distinction between clarinet and saxophone. It's so easy to equate them with the single reed, somewhat similar fingering system, same keyed pitch (Bb and Eb). But they really don't behave like the other, playing-wise, timbre-wise, etc.

And just like the Clarinet, the etymology of the Ever Büree is derivative of a Trumpet! Clarino + ette (small trumpet) vs Ever + Büree (horn trumpet)

I would say the chalumeau. Some say predecessor to the clarinet. Others say a completely different instrument...

Cilindrical bore, sounds lower than same size woodwinds. And if it overblows, which it is not made fore it gives the same duodecime...
