 why does buffet crampon notch the wood under the crows feet on the R-13

It's to do with the height and angle of the RH pinky touches, how close they are to the joint surface and the cut-outs provide the required clearance. Selmer also used to have cut-outs under the RH pinky touches on their clarinets.
