 what a great summer!

Well, I got back from summer camp (Long Lake Camp For The Arts, in the Adirondacks) yesterday. Some interesting things happened, music-wise, that I thought you guys might be interested in. First of all, a spring in my clarinet broke, or something. Basically, I was playing in a pit orchestra for "A Chorus Line," and about halfway through, my "middle c" (an octave above C4) started playing as a C#. For the past three weeks, I've been playing with a rubber band wrapped around the keys-my teacher called it the ugliest repair job in the world, but it's working for now. My clarinet, which is quite old, has been on the verge of breaking down for a while. I'd like to get it overhauled-how much would be a reasonable price for getting the pads replaced, if need be, and the springs replaced, or however they're repaired?
On another topic-at the camp, one of the piano teachers/accompanists, a guy named Bruce, was an accomplished Shakuhachi (a kind of japanese flute) player, started a shakuhachi circle, for playing long tones and improvisation (it's kind of hard to explain-he'd pick a key, usually my e minor, and we'd create chords from it) after teaching a few kids how to make their own flute out of PVC tubing. I joined the circle-on the clarinet! My teacher made me, insisting that it would help my breath support and long tones, as he wanted me to play the 2nd movement of the mozart concerto on parents weekend. It definately helped, as well as being one of the coolest experiences I've ever had. I learned a lot of theory, too.
Another great thing I did? Learned how to play the baritone saxaphone in one week! The musical director for a show called "Leader of the Pack" needed the part to be covered in the pit, and I'd played clarinet in a couple shows (Once Upon a Mattress, and The Music Man) for him. He knew that i played alto sax, and I somehow got roped into playing bari! It was really cool, though. Arts camps are definately great places...

I can offer an estimate on your clarinet- I know nothing about repairs.

It sounds like you had a great time! I just got back from camp, too. I went to Hartwick, which is in Oneonta (the middle of New York state). There was less competition than I had feared and I ended up being principal for the first session and another Sneezy poster was principal second session. I got a lot of experience learning music inhumanly quickly (usually a week) with virtually no practice time. I played clarinet in the highest level band and two of the orchestras. I played 1st violin (the part, not the seat) in another orchestra. I was also in a woodwind quintet, so I had no time! It was stressful but I learned a lot. I had to transpose for the first time (eek) and I played in symphonies by Beethoven, Tchaikovsky, Brahms and Mendelssohn. I had different conductors every week or two so I had to adjust to different styles a lot.

Would I go back? Maybe, but only if I don't get into Saratoga next year.
