hi y'all,,,i was just listening to various peter and the wolf recordings,,some good, some ok ,,but,,,was wondering if anyone out there might know who the clarinet player was on the boston pops/williams/dudley moore recording.was? i mean, well, i know its a ghard excerpt,,but this guy totally lost it climbing up the tree..missed half the notes,,dont know why they left it in,,please dont tell me it was cardillo cuz i always thought he was really good..

I know that Cardillo, my teacher in the 70s, retired in 1984. Do you know when the recording was made?

The information on YouTube says that the recording was released on 1/1/84, so the quick assumption would be that it was Cardillo in his last season.
The performer did miss notes here, but my overall assessment is that in spite of the missed notes they sounded marvelous.
I don't know if anyone has any more authoritative information they could share.

He probably did several perfect takes and then they used the one that was less than perfect. If you mess something up on the red light it’s best to stop and make sure the take is unusable, otherwise there’s a risk they’ll use it on the final edit.

I've played this more than several times during my career and all I can say is that occasionally the cat gets half way up the tree and discovered it's been declawed!

well, cardillo was one of my favs, i know that even mr technique himself, drucker was struggling with stuff in his later years as well..fingers only last so long...well, since we are talking cats..wondering what you think of a little gliss on the last 2 notes of that excerpt so you really can hear that cat meow? i also play that excerpt on the b flat,,a bit easier

LOL. There were a number of passages over the years where I took a great deal of time to learn and then much later found that playing it on the other clarinet made it much easier. In most cases I just continued to play it the way I learned it rather than change horses mid stream. There are a few that come to mind-Copland's Rodeo, Strauss oboe concerto
Here is a great example of Wright and Cardillo playing together. It is Tchaikovsky 5 with Bernstein. It is great ensemble playing

Unfortunately it is not possible to tell what clarinet Cardillo is using. I know he was known as a Selmer player, but I am not sure about the answer to the question above. I have heard a number of examples of great playing from him both in the BSO and playing solos in the pops. These include some recordings of Rhapsody in Blue

When Cioffi left the BSO, Cardillo and Viscuglia switched back to regular Boehm system Selmers. When I studied with Cardillo starting in 1974 he was using Series 10 Gs. He let me try his b-flat but I liked my Buffets better. He sounded great though.
I would agree with Ed that this was not a disaster.
