Looking For Great Clarinet Undergrad Colleges/Teachers
Author: clarinetistrae

Hello! I am a junior in high school starting to do research on universities for an undergrad in clarinet performance in the U.S.. I have tried to do a lot of online research in terms of who are the best clarinet teachers and what universities have the best programs, but a lot of info is outdated by several years. I would like to find more recent information about universities to pursue clarinet performance.
I am aiming for a higher/highest level college. If skill level helps for recommendations, I am a top high school clarinet player in the New England area, and am committed deeply to the study of music.
I am not completely limited to school size and location—although being in the New England area would be nice—and am focusing primarily on finding high-quality teachers with a high-quality education.
Has anyone recently graduated/is currently under a teacher that you would recommend?
What are the top colleges with the best teachers right now? If you have any individual testimony/information, that would be super helpful!
Or, if there is any other information you think would be relevant to someone like me, any help is greatly appreciated. I have high hopes and aspirations, but little knowledge about the world of pursuing clarinet in college. Thank you.

...........well...............

If you're looking for the top school with the top teacher in New England, look no further than Yale and David Shifrin.

Probably the best basset clarinet playing I've ever heard.

Last I heard (which, admittedly, has been some time now), David only takes grad students.

This may currently be the case. When I found out that David was at Yale I happened in on a concert which included a young (sophomore or junior) clarinet student, but that was around 2013.

Things change

Was that clarinet student *his* student? Sometimes, things stay the same.

Yup, a double major in music and computer engineering (or some such money making career). He was amazing! No matter what he's doing now I'm sure he's doing just fine.
