Any recommendations? Is it Yamaha’s Altier: is that still around and otherwise available for mere mortals like me to access to try instruments?

TIA

The owner is extremely knowledgeable about anything clarinet -related; he is an excellent musician and highly skilled tech.

Thanks.

That said, does anybody know much about the Yamaha Altier studio in Manhattan?

Is it open (Covid)? Is it open to anyone?

It would be nice if I could try a bunch of Yamahas like with the Buffet studio and then credit the sale to the dealer of my choosing--if that's possible.

TIA

I do not know about the atelier, but the NYC-Woodwinds sells both Buffet and Yamaha clarinets.
He personally chooses the clarinets he sells at companies' warehouses.
He carries all the professional models from four companies (Uebel and Royal Global in addition to Buffet and Yamaha).

I selected my CSVR clarinets, and a pair for a student, at the Yamaha Atelier in California. We arranged the purchases though our local store ahead of time and so was able to leave with the four clarinets I selected that day from the several dozen they had. This was before the pandemic.

The supply chain is still having major post-Covid delays, and a current student who was looking for a Yamaha CSVR-A was unable to find one new anywhere. This was in November. Yamaha was giving April as the anticipated availablity date at that time. My tech was just there last weekend and unable to get a replacement thumb rest because they had none available.

Now why on earth Tom would I seek to carry out such a logical, make sense plan like yours?! ;)

Thanks. :)

I could be wrong, but I was under the impression the atelier is for professionals and performing artists. Even accommodating those people, they are incredibly busy in New York and California.

Most people’s best bet is to go through a dealer. The Clarinet Gallery in Minnesota recently shared a reel with an assortment of Yamaha clarinets. Michael Norsworthy of NYC woodwind shop is a true expert as well. He’s who I’d recommend visiting in person in NYC.

Thanks James:

Interesting on Mr. Norsworthy's website--no disparaginig intent meant whatsoever--that he's pictured with a Selmer in hand: the brand he isn't a dealer in!

He is a Selmer artist and plays Selmer.

I am a dealer for Yamaha and would be happy to help in any way that I can. Thanks to m1964 and James for their recommendations!

Regarding Selmer, I’m a small business and have to consider how to grow carefully as each brand comes with substantial upfront costs. I’m working on growing my offerings and will keep everyone updated!

All the best,
Michael
