I used "The Practice of Harmony" by Peter Spencer. It worked well for me, but is a little expensive. But it shows a lot of good examples and has exercises you can do. Good luck!

Are you talking about starting from scratch? If so, learned on the Rubank books.

The Rubank books are not THEORY books. They teach you how to play but absolutely nothing about music theory.

Elementary and Advanced Harmony (in 2 vols.) by Robert W. Ottman. former professor at NTSU. Also Piston's book is good.

Paul O. Harders, Basic Materials in Music Theory

This is the finest basic music theory book that I know of. I require ALL of my clarinet students to complete the entire book....cover to cover.

Prentice Hall; ISBN: 0205295843

The book reference on Amazon can be found below.

I endorse the Master Theory Workbook. All of my students have to complete the first 3 volumes. I also provide online help for users of the book at:

The Musician's Institute also has a good book entitled Harmony & Theory. It's published by Hal Leonard.

Oh, one other book.

Classical Music for Dummies.

Go to your local bookstore and read Ch.11 "The Dreaded Music Theory Chapter."
