 Clarinet Barrels
Author: Andy

Recently, I saw that many professionals actually bought their own barrels.
May I know what is the barrel use for and how does it improve your playing?
And what are some of the brands of these clarinet barrels???

The barrel is important because it is the "tuning" barrel. Many of us use barrels that we purchase in addition to our instrument because we like a particular characteristic of the barrel--perhaps one that gives us a "darker" tone and helps our intonation. Some like barrels that help to "center" the tone.

The first time I tried a different barrel I was amazed at the improvement in the sound quality of my instrument.

Combined with a good mouthpiece, reed and ligature--a great tuning barrel can make a huge difference in how you sound.

As we have discussed before, I suggest being careful to check that the new barrel and upper joint and mouthpiece bores are VERY closely matched. Any diameter differences can be felt via a small little finger test. I [bravely] did a bit of [OLD]barrel enlargement [ cone forming? carefully] via sandpapering and was surprised at the improvement. Good technicians can closely match the bores of mouthpiece and barrel upper end. This process is called reaming. I would suggest you to read the very informative J&D Hite site's article about Moennig Barrel. It says reaming may be necessary after some period (say one year) playing too since barrel expands and shrinks many times.
