Anyone in the clarinet space for even a short while gets familiar with the plethora of gear out there that ultimately isn't well received or doesn't find itself being accepted/standing the test of time by a fair share of players.
But every so often some piece of gear, some tool, really changes our approach and/or is accepted if not by the masses, then at least a fair share of players as really making a contribution to play.
I'm reminded of this fact as Legere embarks on its new product offering. And while I'm not a Legere player I think their offerings would definitely deserve to be on a list of clarinet and clarinet gear milestones as the first synthetic reed that truly went mainstream.
What are some other paradigm changers you can think of? Clearly this is subjective. Whether the polycylindrical bore, or Ridenour's ATG Reed adjustment system (a personal favorite), or Vandoren's recent synthetic reed offering, what things have you come across that really made a difference as reported by at least a fair share of players?
Ligatures need not apply. I'm sorry, they make marginal difference among the best of players. Unlike the ATG system they don't turn an unplayable reed into a potentially great reed.
TIA

I still think the ProTech Gel thumb rest made a huge improvement in comfort. I recommend using super glue to keep it in the place for the long haul.
And you won’t like this one but Vandoren has made me a believer in the carbon fiber ligature…….. at least for Legere.
Oh and the recent foray a few manufacturers have gone on regarding thumb trigger, bell mounted low E and low F tuning. I think it’s about time we went back to this on Boehm .

Jennifer : If you like the clarinet sling then you should get to know Stephen Fox's gear: http://www.sfoxclarinets.com/Accessories.html a physically challenged clarinetist's best friend.
Paul: you get an exemption for the carbon fiber lig given your claim of its indication on specifically a synthetic reed Your not claiming it the ligature end all be of "ginzu steak knives."

A rise in the development and technology of non wooden instruments offering good sound performance to musicians at more affordable prices, with additional benefits in their resistance to adverse atmospheric conditions.

Perhaps these aren't for everyone, but how about :
Polycylindrical bores.
Left-hand Eb lever.
CNC mouthpieces.
Mouthpiece patches
Basset extensions

While i support all of the above. CNC mouthpieces stand out for me. Having refaced mouthpieces off and on for about 30 years every time I find an older mouthpiece (without naming names) they make me cringe with the poor quality. The same would apply to instrument manufacture and quality with current manufacturing.

Does anyone remember the "Schmidt Stick?" Any of our readers still use one?
