Selmer has announced they have just brought out a new clarinet reed. They claim they have spent three years developing it, which doesn't prove anything. Anyway, it's worth a try. I'll buy a pack.

I am not sure about European reed prices, but they are not cheap at 42 Euro per box of 10.
Hopefully the price reflects quality.
If you buy a pack, could you, please report here your impressions?

And how long will it be before packs of them will be found in the bargain bins?

Chris: Selmer claims they make them themselves at their Mantes-la-Jolie factory. They certainly have the necessary technology. Since the company's take-over by an investment fund, they have become commercially more aggresive.

1964: Maybe I can get some free samples out of them. I doubt it, though. When Selmer was a family-run company, this was possible. 42 euros is 25 percent more expense than Vandoren! If 8 out of the 10 reeds are good, it's worth it.

anon: Selmer had reeds ages ago and then discontinued them. They gave it another try five years ago; unsuccessfully. These reeds are supposed to be very different: the result of three years of research. "a voir", we say in French, which means: wait and see.

I can't seem to find these reeds for sale anywhere in the US despite all the Conn-Selmer dealers we have in the US. Am I missing something??

Eb clarinet: I seem to recall that Conn-Selmer is an entirely separate company from Selmer France.

Well, you know, we clarinetists are like bibliophiles -- always looking for the perfect read. At the moment, I'm playing on Rigotti Golds, and I'm impressed. But can anyone recommend the perfect reed for my basset horn?

I'm forced to interpret your question as one where you are looking for some really impressive reed brand for your basset horn, as the perfect reed doesn't--as you must know--exist, remain the perfect reed for long even if holding this title for a fleeting moment, and is highly subjective.
If you are impressed with Rigott as you've said, I'd say "if it ain't broke, don't fix it."

Trouble is, Rigotti don't make reeds for basset horns -- only for Bflat it seems.

Nobody seems to have tried these reeds out yet! Maybe this cost is prohibitive, unless 8 or 9 out of the 10 are really good.

This is not correct. Conn-Selmer, Inc. and Henri Selmer Paris are separate companies. Conn-Selmer is merely the distributor of Selmer Paris instruments in North America. Conn-Selmer also owns the "Selmer" brand (without "Paris") and sells various instruments under that name. This brand is often informally referred to as "Selmer USA."
Henri Selmer Paris is majority-owned by an equity fund group known as Argos Wityu.

LostConn: You're absolutely right, of course. When Selmer was up for grabs a few years ago, its CEO told me that being bought up by Conn-Selmer was one of the things they most wanted to avoid. The other things they wanted to avoid was being bought up by Buffet or the Chinese. Unfortunately, it would appear they're not doing so well these days.
