Hey all, I recently bought an old clarinet that came with a "Classic Runyon" mouthpiece. Anyone know anything about these? I'm mainly concerned about the tip opening and facing of course. I play on a 5RV lyre currently.

Interesting. So it's probably a step down from the Vandoren?

That was my plan. I just haven't gotten it yet haha. I also wanted to learn more about this brand I've never heard of.

yes its a step down from vandy. its still a decent mpcs. i have a few in my giant runyon collection and all are decent players. these were meant to be student mpcs after all. i acquired a huge lot of runyon clarinet mpcs when the factory contents were sold off. no one wanted them. the sax ones sold like hotcakes and i got none of them. i was after the bass clarinet mpcs mostly and had no control of what was in the lot. whats interesting with the bass models is some are made for a440 and some for a442

Runyon made some great mouthpieces and some really terrible ones. I love my Runyon soprano sax and bari sax pieces (bright yet full and rich), hate the alto and tenor pieces (harsh and shrill). I’ve never tried the clarinet piece. But if it’s anything like the soprano sax piece, sign me up. My so-called Vandoren jazz pieces didn’t exactly knock my socks off (dull yet shrill at the same time). Looking forward to your comparison.

i have many of the runyon jazz clarinet mpcs also . they all play good and are what you want in a jazz clarinet mpc but there are better one to be had. my brillhart tonalin and beechler tonalite and a vintage slant sig otto link really knock my socks off. for more extreme volume -i like the lakey . i also have a truly exceptional vandy 5jb but it wants very soft reeds or its just too much work . i like to use rico plasticovers for jazz clarinet as you get more zip right off the batt just from the reed.

Thanks Dan. I probably just need softer reeds for my 5JB as I have to work really hard on mine too. Will definitely be on the lookout for the others you mentioned. The plasticovers are also an excellent idea as warpage is this doubler's worst enemy.
