I'm learning lots from old posts on this bulletin board. I've been impressed with the helpfulness of experienced clarinet players with those of us who are new to the instrument, its technique, and its terminology. As the mother of a budding clarinetist, I'm trying to learn all I can. (I'm even trying to learn to play the clarinet along with my daughter.) I also appreciate the "gentleness" with which you handle questions. I've seen bulletin boards on other subjects in which posters are downright derogatory to each other. Clarinets must attract nice people.
OK., my question from reading your posts:
How do you pronounce Buffet? Is it the French pronunciation like Bu-FEY? or is it with a hard "t" like in Warren Buffet?
Thanks,
Ruby
p.s. An observation from two days of working on embouchure: Clarinetists must be great kissers with the muscles they've developed around their lips! Geez, I didn't know I had those muscles until a few days ago.

I shall really confuse if I tell you the way the French pronounce it, but here goes ... purse your lips as if to say e, then say u. Voila, the u in buffet is pronounced as a cross between a u and an e. A straight anglo-saxon U is written in French as ou -- like Ouganda.

Ruby,
There's really only one "lip" muscle--it's the orbicularis oris, and it encircles your entire mouth.
I don't know if clarinetists are better kissers, I've never kissed another clarinetist! (That would be incestuous!!)

Languages are difficult for those who do not speak the native tongue. Buffet would be pronounced closely to our "Boo-fŽy" with the accent on the last syllable.
