I play on Vandoren BD5s on Bb/A CSVRs and Eb 881.
It’s a very good set up and I’d still recommend it to most however I’m just feeling something is missing in the sound. Recently tried some m30s for Bb which I used for almost 20 years but they absolutely do not work for me anymore. I’m a different player now.
Curious to know if people playing yamaha have migrated from the Bd5 to something else.
Side note. I could not be happier with my Buffet Prestige Bass and Selmer Forcus mouthpiece. I’d like to achieve a similar level of satisfaction with the Bb/A/Eb.
My main playing environment is professional orchestral work. Excellent pitch and projection to the back of the hall are priorities.

Hey James,
We're on similar setups. I've been using the D'Addario Reserve Evolution (the marble one) with my CSVs, with Reserve Evolution 4s. I did just order a Grabner mouthpiece to try, after trying one out on my basset horn, and loving the one I have on bass. So we'll see there too!
I've had no problems with projecting, and playing at all dynamic levels.
Good luck with the search! Interested to hear what you choose.

I haven't tried it myself (I play on buffets) but I've heard people sounding great on the B40 lyre 13 on Yamahas. Maybe you could try that.

You may want to get in touch with Clark Fobes. He has a variety of facings and you could likely find something that would work.

Mike Dassios makes a really nice mouthpiece. I have his L facing that reminds me of a BD 5 with a bit more resonance. I don’t know what your price point is.
I am a bit curious if the high density BD 6 that is coming out soon. I just don’t have the time to go up to LA to try it out.

I play CSGs and have mostly used Zinner mouthpieces over the recent years. I have played BD5s with good results as well as BD4s (which I prefer in an orchestral setting). However, even with the BD-series, I find most Vandorens to be too restrictive and somehow a bit rough in their sound.
As I'm getting older and looking for better results with less effort, I've recently tried the Gleichweit mouthpieces (BW B7-1, B7-4, B8-4) and they are wonderful for me. They play in tune, have a very smooth, warm, clear sound that is consistent over all ranges and dynamics, respond well, are very reed friendly and have a modest resistance that one can really sing into. You can ask for recommendations and a 10-day trial period from Gleichweit and I have also seen them on Innoledy.

+1 on Gleichweit. My B7-4, and 8-0 play well on my SEVR, CSVR, and CSGiii clarinets
Similar in feel to BD5, but with greater control, easier altissimo. Reed friendly. Flexible, use for chamber music, jazz, and concert band.
Also, as an aging clarinetist, for some reason I have migrated from close tip Zinner pieces (e.g. Greg Smith) to more open pieces like BD5, and now Gleichweit.

Noticed this issue with the BD5 myself on my own CSVR.
You might want to give the M30D a shot (not the regular M30, the one made for Reform Boehm clarinets). It has a bit more color and flexibility than the BD5, while still having a lot of the stability in all ranges that makes it attractive.

Hi folks,
I've played the CSVR since its introduction and the CSG before that. I use Ramón Wodkowski's mouthpieces which work really well with my horns. I've found him very easy to work with through the mail, but have also gone to see him for adjustments when my schedule allows- he's very professional and easy to work with.
Ramón recently came into some new stock of vintage Riffault blanks which he made into a fantastic mouthpiece for me. Here's a few noodles in my concert hall (just with my phone) so you can get an idea:

Additionally, he has a catalog of mouthpieces utilizing his own blanks. I've played his B1 model for quite a while and find it extremely comfortable to play with a medium reed (Vandoren V12 3.5). Beautiful sound and very even response with easy articulation. Here's a sample from last season when I was playing guest principal with the St. Louis Symphony from their social media:

I personally can't play the BD5 or B40 Lyre because I feel that I have to use a much more pressure oriented approach to the mouthpiece to focus the sound, which doesn't work for me.
Just one person's opinion. I use Ramón's mouthpieces because they work.
Good luck in your search!

Ditched the BD5 for the M13 Lyre. Couldn't be happier!

I think BD6 HD will come out eventually. Should give a try to that one.
