Just worked on it this year, actually. It is a neat piece, but I definitely have some tips that will help you out if you play it. First of all, it's very long, and it's a real stamina piece. It'll tire you out a lot, so make sure that you practice running it through as much as possible. Secondly, contrast is everything. There's a lot of repetition in it, so unless you do contrasts in dynamics and especially colour, it'll feel very flat. Thirdly, the technique in it is pretty tricky, and making sure that it's all even and fluid really makes a difference. My big stumbling block was blurring the notes, rather than clearly playing each, so drill all the technical passages as much as possible. Other than that, my best tip is that the composer did a lot of writing for movie, TV, and radio. Think of it in terms of that--as representing characters--and it's much easier to play. It's a lot of fun, and sounds really good when you get it all in place. Good luck!

Just played it yesterday at my jury - a super piece with lots to offer ! I agree with Katherine 100% ... the dynamics makes the piece work. What helped me was visualizing a real life situation for various passages in the piece, e.g., an imp running through a forest & jumping out behind trees & surprising people ... music at a seance ... the imp running into a wall, etc.
What also helped me was playing it through 3-4 times a day the week before the jury, and not rushing the tempo.
There's a wonderful CD recording of it by Karl Leister, as
well. Enjoy !!
