Hi there, I thought there was already a thread about this (or mention of it) but could not find anything...
After playing this piece for 30 years, a few years back I played the 2nd part with my old teacher as a part of an Auckland Chamber Orchestra concert. My old teacher played the 1st part, and we discovered a note that there seems to be disagreement over...
- In the first mvt, at figure 1 (top of the 2nd page) there is an E on the 2nd beat of the bar. I had always played this as E natural, had never been corrected by various teachers and have found several recordings/live clips of other players also playing this note as an E natural.
- Of course, according to the rules of music it SHOULD be an E sharp and there also exist many recorded versions with it played as E#.
So, what do you play? (it is of course part of a figure that is repeated 8 times on that page). And how did you come to this?
I have no recollection at all of how I came to play E natural. My wife and I are performing it in 6 days time so it's on the stand this week.

I reckon E#.
According to the title on my old copy (1966 or earlier) Poulenc revised the piece in 1945. The use of accidentals in this print is scrupulous: no cautionary accidentals, and accidentals on grace notes apply for the whole bar (for example in the 3rd movement).
Like you, Donald, I have often heard it with E natural - I think stemming from a natural inclination to play a perfect fourth, rather than a tritone, from the preceding note. This passage is bitonal, so comparison with the 2nd part is of limited help.
All the best for your performance!
