 Vito vs Bundy vs Jupiter
Author: Irish Luck
Date:   2023-08-27 22:36

Im getting back into playing after many years.
A friend of mine is selling some of his older practice clarinets. He’s in another state so I’m unable to try any of them. He’s got three I can pick from. All three are in really good playable condition.
So all things equal, which would you choose and why.
Vito V40
Older Selmer Bundy resonite
Jupiter CEC-635

Any input/advice is much appreciated.
Thank you

I played A Vito V40 for quite some time. Because it has a large 0.590" bore, it is what they call "free blowing". IMO, the V40 is solidly well built.

My understanding is the Bundy comes in 2 bore sizes: a large 0.590" "free blowing" model and a smaller 0.577" which will be slightly resistant, less "free blowing". Again, to my understand, both are solidly well built. If it just says "Bundy" on it, it should be a 0.590". A 0.577" Bundy is clearly marked "Bundy 577".

By "solidly well built", what I mean to say is that the keys are very sturdy and are almost impossible to bend out of shape.

Others will have to chime in about the Jupiter.

My understanding is that smaller bore instruments have better tuning scales than large bore instruments. So you might want to take that into consideration.

Hello Irish Luck,
I will try to answer your question (or maybe not?) from another angle.

What is/was your playing level? What is your goal?
Is it to just practice in home? Play in community band? Play with retired musicians/professionals in a local symphony orchestra?

The goal should be determining your approach. If you are really serious about getting back into playing, maybe you should consider a used "professional" clarinet in good condition.
Older Selmers and Buffets were very well built; if you can get one in good condition, it will serve you much better than any plastic clarinets. There are many posts on the topic of cheap vs. good clarinets on this board.

If I had to choose between three different makes, I would (ideally) prefer to handle each one and see which fits my hands better.

My advice would be to look for a used professional Selmer or Buffet instrument in good condition.

The Vito and the Bundy are both good choices. If you have large hands I'd suggest the Vito, if your hands are smaller the Bundy will be a better fit. If the Jupiter is fairly new it could be a good choice, but if it's an older instrument perhaps not. Their quality control has improved over recent years. My personal choice would be the Vito.

Vito. I grew up on bundy's and they were horrible things. Most notes flat but some much more than others, hard to fix with shorter barrels, different mouthpieces etc. Jupiters are also of questionable quality in my experience. The vito if properly maintained is the best of the 3 you mentioned.
