This is terrible.
It's also an aberration. The Latin expression caveat emptor, or buyer beware applies in all situations, even if more so on the internet, and particular outside of the realm of sites like ebay and Amazon where purchase satisfaction and conflict resolution infrastructure exists.
I have bought tons on ebay. 99.9% has been as described. The few problems I had were resolved, either by the seller or ebay. I worked with sellers with good reputations and didn't expect a "Ferrari offered at $15" to worth bidding on, being too good to be true.

I think the reason is for promotion of third party commercial websites, or maybe conflict of interest from people pimping their own auctions secretly. You see in old posts on here from the early 2000s people were really getting reprimanded for violations.
Another thing like that I remember was a post where someone copied and pasted something from another website, but it was removed for potential copyright violation. Well the link has been down for who knows how many years (decades?!), and the page was not on the wayback machine! Whatever it was would have survived had it been allowed to stay up.
I digress, wild stories there, didn’t hear about those.

Originally we were inundated with eBay ads - this part of the BBoard is for discussion, not advertising. And the ads on eBay itself were gone after a while, leaving it to me and Glenn (back then) to clean up the messes. We had not just eBay ads but regular vendors posting here - and I never got a penny of commission. Ever. I have once in a while got a small donation from some of the vendors, though, but ... 5% commission on a $2000 sale would have been nice!
I built the "For Sale" board so people could put their ebay and other ads there if they want - I clean up old and "sold" ads there on an infrequent basis, but I do get to it. Funny though, I hardly ever see eBay ads there though they're allowed.

Hi Mark, thank you very much for clarifying this for me.
Yes, I could have emailed you directly, however, I thought it might be in the best interest for everyone to know.

While links to ongoing eBay auctions aren't permitted here for reasons already mentioned, we can post ended ones, eg. if we've bought an interesting instrument and want more info on it, or to show the progress from one that looks like a total wreck in the listing to undergoing a full restoration to become a fully playable instrument again.

Under the rules page:
"No auction (eBay or otherwise) links, references, comments, or questions about currently selling items."
There are further details, but as stated by Mark, a lot of it was because of the shilling that would take place.
I often see people making a big deal as if eBay cannot even be mentioned for fear of reprimand or banning, which has never been the case. It was for those other reasons.

It took a while, but, I finally found the rules page. It's under a clickable link just to the right of Search.

Mark gives the reason (I wasn't a BBoard member that far back) why the ads aren't allowed. I always assumed the formulation "auction website whose name cannot be mentioned" and variations, was just a tongue-in-cheek Harry Potter reference. I've "mentioned" E-bay more than once (before Mark asked me to help moderate the BBoard) and was not flagged for it, but I was never trying to link an ad from them.
