Proper strength of reeds for a mouthpiece
Author: Jimis4klar

I want to ask particularly about Vandoren but my enquiry can be more general. Are the recommended reed strengths from the mouthpiece chart on each mouthpiece a must to follow or someone may find a reed out of the recommended strengths more comfortable? More specifically, I have an engraved B40 and while chart recommends 2 1/2- 3 1/2 in V12s, I feel like 3 1/2+ would be more ideal. Let me know what you think.

To quote your own text, their recommendations. Deviations outside the range, particular small ones, are part in parcel with user preference.

Does this mean that I advocate players using a strength 5 Vandoren on a B45, BD7, or 5JB mouthpiece, or for that matter a 2.5 strength reed on a M13, no. Such leaps are so out of the norm to suggest that an embouchure may need examination by someone in the know.

If you don't get a lot of responses, it's because the previous one was spot on.

The recommended strengths by the manufacturer is more intended to give you an idea of where to start. The only thing that matters in the end is what works best for you specifically.

One caveat: don't commit to buying too many 3.5+ boxes until you've been through a box or two more - unless you've already been through that process. Any reed brand can tend to drift slightly one way or the other strength for strength, so the next box of 3.5+ may overall seem harder, the next box of 3.5 may also seem harder. But I agree with the other replies that the charts are guidelines, not commandments.
